Seaman board approves 2025–26 high school schedule change, reversing eight-period model

The Seaman USD 345 Board of Education voted to approve the proposed Seaman High School schedule for the 2025–26 school year, moving the high school away from an eight-course model toward a seven-course structure designed to increase instructional time and expand advisory/intervention periods.
Principal (Mr.) Jones presented the schedule proposal developed by a 13-member committee, site council feedback and staff stakeholders. The presentation emphasized goals of consistency and equity in class meeting times, improved student focus, fewer “filler” classes, and longer advisory blocks for interventions and social-emotional learning. The committee described potential effects on elective enrollment and scheduling logistics for students who participate in concurrent programs such as Washburn Tech.
During discussion, board members asked about impacts on elective availability, extracurricular participation and early graduation trends. Administration provided historical early-graduation numbers: early graduates rose from low double digits before the move to eight sections to higher counts in recent years (administration cited increases to 36, 40 and later 56 early graduates in recent years). Several board members noted potential trade-offs between exploration and focused instructional time.
A motion to advance the schedule from discussion to action passed earlier in the meeting (5–2). At the action item the board voted to approve the high school schedule proposal for 2025–26. The motion to approve was made from the board and seconded; the board chair called the vote and the motion carried. Administration said counselors should begin enrollment planning immediately to align student selections with the new structure.
Administration will return to the board with details about the implementation timeline, counselor enrollment guidance and any refinements needed for lunch scheduling and student services.
