Huron district selected for state-led lead-in-drinking-water testing; sampling to begin

District staff reported the Huron School District accepted a Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) partnership funded by an EPA grant to conduct lead testing and remedial work; testing kickoff has occurred and sampling will begin in coming weeks.
The Huron School District has partnered with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources on an EPA-funded program to test drinking water in district facilities for lead and to address any identified problems at grant expense until funds are exhausted, district business manager Kelly Kristofferson reported on Feb. 10.
The board previously approved partnering with DANR at its May 28 meeting. Kristofferson said the district was accepted as one of two partner schools in the state program; a kickoff meeting was held the week before the Feb. 10 board meeting and sampling and testing will begin in the coming weeks. Kristofferson said costs for testing and any required corrective work will be paid by the grant until the grant money is expended.
District staff said the program will include water sampling, testing, and communication of results to stakeholders. No test results, timelines for corrective work, or specific buildings-to-be-tested were provided at the Feb. 10 public meeting.
Board members were informed that the program is in progress and that updates will be provided as testing yields results.
