Walnut Creek — The Walnut Creek City Council unanimously awarded a contract on Feb. 4 to MCK Services, Inc. to perform base failure repairs and restriping on the eastern segment of Ygnacio Valley Road.

Council members framed the project as a combination of pavement patching and traffic‑safety improvements. City Engineer Smidar Boardman told the council the work is split into two treatment types: base repairs (localized structural pavement work) on the hilly, uphill sections, and a striping/median treatment between San Carlos Drive (near Heather Farm Park) and Oak Grove designed to increase lane visibility and reduce vehicle speeds.

Boardman said the striping work will replace outdated raised reflectors (“pucks”) with brighter, Caltrans‑standard pavement markings and reflective materials to improve visibility at night and in rain. At a location westbound near Oak Grove, staff will install a short raised island — described as a “tough curb” with a delineator — to discourage illegal quick U‑turns where drivers had been using a right‑turn slip lane for unsafe maneuvers.

Timing, cost and follow‑up: Boardman said work could begin in late spring to early summer if weather permits and estimated about one month of construction, subject to contractor scheduling. He said the city is planning a larger paving project design for 2026 and noted the base repairs are intended to mitigate failures until that larger repaving occurs. Boardman said the larger paving project has a federal earmark that the city hopes to use for future work.

Council members asked about the extent of full repaving versus localized repairs; staff clarified that this contract covers limited base repairs and striping rather than full‑depth repaving of the corridor.

The motion to award contract 24‑12 for the Ygnacio Valley Road base failure repair and restriping project to MCK Services, Inc. passed on a 5–0 roll call vote.
