Commission amends city code to allow persons under 21 in fenced outdoor entertainment areas where alcohol is sold

Pittsburg commissioners adopted ordinance G1371 to amend section 6-2 of the city code permitting persons under age 21 to enter permanent, fenced outdoor entertainment or recreation areas that are operated in conjunction with a licensed business selling alcohol, subject to the licensees control and ID checks.
The Pittsburg City Commission on Feb. 25 adopted ordinance G1371, amending section 6-2 of the Pittsburg city code to permit persons under age 21 to enter certain permanent outdoor entertainment or recreational areas that are adjacent to and operated by licensed businesses that sell alcoholic liquor or cereal malt beverage.
City staff explained the amendment is intended to allow family-friendly activities in permanently fenced, gated courtyards and similar spaces next to an establishment with a liquor license (for example, a courtyard next to a theater or a restaurant with a courtyard). The ordinance applies only to permanently enclosed and gated outdoor entertainment/recreation areas operated under the businesss license; it does not change general underage restrictions for establishments that are not operating such an area.
Staff said the police department had no objections; the city clarified the areas would be gated and staffed so that licensees check IDs at controlled entry points and prevent removal of alcohol from the premises.
Commissioners approved the ordinance by voice vote.
