Middle school students tell board they favor flexible instructional (FID) snow days; 94% support in survey

Two seventh‑grade students from Pottsgrove Middle School told the board they conducted a Google Form survey showing strong student support for Flexible Instructional Days (FID days), a model in which students complete assigned work during a snow day so the day need not be made up.
Natalie Halsiel, a seventh grader, said 466 students at Pottsgrove Middle School completed the survey. “The data of the Google form shows that 94.4% of students would prefer FID days,” she said, and she said 91.8% of respondents indicated they would complete assigned work on an FID day.
Pearl Cherry, also a seventh grader, explained students envisioned several ways to complete the work: teachers posting assignments on Schoology, synchronous sessions via Zoom, or paper packets distributed ahead of a forecasted weather event for younger students. The students told the board the district provides hotspots and Chromebooks or iPads for students without home internet access.
Board members praised the students’ initiative and noted that Superintendent Dr. Finney would meet with them to discuss the survey further. The students said they will continue the conversation with district staff.
