Board hears progress on two new middle schools and other facility projects; openings planned for fall 2027

District facilities staff told the Hobbs Municipal Schools Board on Feb. 25 that early construction work has begun for a proposed new middle school and that related design reviews and bidding are underway.
The district reported the Public School Facilities Authority (PSFA) approved the project’s design and that an early work package — including Calle Grande Road utilities and site work — was approved. The general contractor Bradbury Stamm has issued subcontractor bid packages; district staff said bids are due and that the district expects to finalize a guaranteed maximum price and submit the GMP to PSFA by March. Staff said the Public School Capital Outlay Council (PSCOC) will consider adjustments and the GMP in April.
Presenters showed the school’s floor plans, interior collaborative spaces, library, performing-arts and athletic layouts and described safety features such as secure vestibules and monitored wash stations. The district described a construction timeline with early dirt work planned to start in mid-to-late April and major construction to begin after school is out in May; staff said both new campuses are anticipated to open in fall 2027.
Operations staff also gave updates on other projects: completion of playgrounds at Stone and Coronado, a repaired tennis-court wall, security-vestibule door installations across campuses, replacement of electrical panels at Will Rogers planned for spring break and a planned permanent staff parking area at College Lane tied to a City of Hobbs street tie-in. The district said it submitted a five-year facility master-plan application to PSCOC and will hire an outside architecture firm if the plan is approved.
Board members asked about timing, community engagement on the master plan and safety measures. No formal construction contract was approved by the board during the meeting; staff reported ongoing coordination with PSFA, PSCOC and the City of Hobbs.
