Board approves policy change on Title IX enforcement; public urges addition of Eid and Diwali to school calendar

At the Feb. 25 meeting the district presented several policy items for first read and the board approved a policy action (listed as item 12c on the agenda) intended to eliminate duplicative documents created under an earlier court injunction while preserving nondiscrimination protections.

Policy committee chair Miss Cancro explained that the change removes a pair of locally created duplicative policies (103a and 104a) that were adopted after an injunction and that the district’s nondiscrimination protections remain anchored in Title IX and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission definitions. “The definition of who is protected does not change,” she said, adding that the district’s student and staff protections under existing policy 103 and 104 remain in force.

Public comment at the meeting also featured multiple speakers urging calendar changes. Residents asked the board to add Eid and Diwali to the district calendar so students do not have to take days out of school privately for religious observances. One speaker, Seema Dachor, cited classroom demographics and said adding those holidays would allow students to celebrate without seeking teacher permission or arranging makeup work. Other public commenters raised family‑childcare concerns about how early dismissals and single days off are scheduled and asked that the district make the criteria for FID (full‑day closure/delayed opening) decisions publicly available.

District staff said calendar scheduling is influenced by contractual and professional‑development requirements and noted that the education committee and school staff will review calendar drafts; staff also said the district will continue to collect input from teachers, parents and community members as the calendar is drafted.
