The curriculum, instruction and technology committee prioritized artificial intelligence this month, the committee chair reported at the Feb. 25 board meeting.
Committee members described staff professional development sessions introducing AI concepts and classroom applications, grade-level media-literacy and civic lessons tied to AI, and district pilots giving staff access to built-in AI tools in Google Meet and other platforms. The committee encouraged further structured professional development so teachers could use AI as a research and instructional aid; the committee chair demonstrated how tools such as Google Notebook and Perplexity can help board members and staff search meeting materials and produce summaries.
The committee also described a new approach to assessment analysis: rather than reporting single-year assessment snapshots, staff are building cohort-tracking sets that follow the same group of students from grade 7 into grade 9. That cohort analysis showed consistent year-on-year growth in English language arts for the cohort presented but less consistent growth in math, with student performance diverging as students transition into grade 9 algebra. Committee members said the cohort approach will inform curriculum adjustments, interventions and articulation with sending districts.
The committee recommended the board accept the monthly data reports the district provided and approved the agenda items presented at the meeting.
