District to apply for waiver after reaching 20-student threshold for Spanish-speaking learners; targeted ESL planned

The committee described parallel plans for targeted professional development to help general-education teachers support multilingual learners in their classrooms. The school district reported that testing of multilingual learners to assess English proficiency is underway.
Committee members noted the threshold applies districtwide regardless of grade level. The report said the district's multilingual population is growing in Spanish and that Indonesian-speaking students are increasing as well; the Indonesian cohort had not reached the 20-student threshold but committee members said it is growing.
The district will continue implementing targeted supports pending the waiver and the results of proficiency testing.
