Curriculum office requests modest increases to support writing, PD and data systems

The Metuchen Board of Education reviewed a presentation of the curriculum office's proposed 2025–26 budget Tuesday, which the curriculum supervisor said focuses on curriculum writing stipends, professional development, systems management and teacher-leader compensation.
The supervisor outlined five budget categories: $29,229 for stipends to teachers who write and revise curriculum documents; $22,500 for contracted providers to support outside professional development and registration fees (including AP institutes and targeted departmental consultants); $20,203 for systems management, which covers the district's Frontline staff-evaluation and professional-growth system and a new advanced Linkit feature for student grouping and data analysis; $11,840 to compensate teacher leaders who run in-district workshops and mentor new staff; and $1,000 for basic curriculum-office supplies.
The supervisor said some curriculum work is supported by federal Title I, II-A, III and IV-A funds and that the administration has begun contingency planning in case federal support is reduced. Board members asked about how priorities would be adjusted if grant funds were unavailable; the supervisor said the district leadership (including the superintendent and the business office) is identifying and prioritizing areas of need within each federal fund.
The presenter also noted the district is shifting some dollars from curriculum-writing to in-house professional development to address operational needs.
The board did not adopt the budget at the meeting; it will continue budget deliberations at finance and in future public hearings.
