Sheriff Furlong, the Carson City School District and local partners announced a co-sponsored visit by the Mexican consulate intended to inform families in Carson City about legal resources and rights.
Sheriff Furlong said during the board meeting that the initiative grew out of a desire to improve community relationships and reduce misinformation. He described the event as "a step in the right direction," and said the consulate would meet with local families to discuss available resources and to hear community concerns. The district and the sheriff’s office are co-sponsors; a local Catholic church is hosting the initial event.
District officials and trustees encouraged attendance and noted space is limited. The transcript records a later reference to a related presentation scheduled for March 2 at Saint Teresa Avila, where the sheriff, district representatives and the consulate will speak with families about legal rights. Board President Lupe Ramirez and Superintendent AJ Fielding both thanked the sheriff and partners for organizing the session.
Sheriff Furlong said the initiative will also include outreach meetings with sheriffs from neighboring Washoe and Douglas counties and with district leaders to discuss shared concerns. "We want all of our students, all of our families, all of the folks that live here in town to feel safe," he said.
The district did not provide a public registration link on the transcript and noted the venue’s space is limited; the transcript indicates the event was being announced at parish services to encourage attendance within the host congregation. Officials said they expect additional, larger events if demand and venue availability allow.
