Carson City board adopts district ICT security policy after second reading

The Carson City School District Board of Trustees voted Feb. 25 to adopt a district policy on information and communication technology security after a second reading.

The policy — presented as CCSD policy 10-65, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Security — was revised on the basis of prior board feedback. Staff described three technical changes: moving a disclaimer about the causes of data loss to the policy’s introductory text; changing the title reference from "director of information technology" to "director of Innovation and Technology" to reflect the correct position title; and adjusting language to refer specifically to the confidentiality, integrity and availability of "data." Staff said the policy is intended to be foundational for internal standards on cybersecurity and student data privacy.

"Based on board feedback from the last meeting, what was referred to as a disclaimer under item 3 ... was moved up under paragraph 1 to better clarify that it is not an action that we were gonna take as a bulleted item," presenter Mr. Maderos said during the second-reading presentation.

Trustee Richard Varner moved to adopt the policy, and Trustee Walker seconded the motion. The board chair called the vote; "All those in favor," the chair said, and the motion carried with no opposition recorded on the transcript.

The motion as stated during the meeting recorded the adopted date as Feb. 25, 2025 and referenced the policy language as presented to the board. Board members asked no substantive questions during the second reading and thanked staff for the work.
