City reports progress on East Side visioning; consultant selection still pending

City staff told Jackson City Council on Feb. 25 that efforts to advance an East Side economic development initiative are gaining traction, with community groups expressing interest in contributing to improvements along East Michigan Avenue and surrounding neighborhoods. Staff said two consultant teams remained under consideration to lead the visioning work and that the selection had not been finalized.
During the update, a staff member said the choice was between the Smith Group and Zimmerman Volk, and that two staff or panel members had not yet cast their votes. Staff described outreach from service groups and residents who want to participate in corridor improvement efforts, and reported that Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) indicated it may extend related work beyond M-127 up to Page Avenue.
Council members asked for, and were offered, follow-up information. The update concluded with staff saying the project is building momentum and that additional stakeholders are asking to be involved.
