Greater Tulsa Area Indian Affairs Commission discusses Mohawk and Dreamkeepers Park plans, sets student recognition for April

The Greater Tulsa Area Indian Affairs Commission used its February meeting to discuss parks projects including Mohawk Park and Dreamkeepers Park, plan Native American Day and set a schedule to recognize outstanding senior students in April.
Commissioners said they had met with the Tulsa Parks Department and reviewed a new master plan for Mohawk Park, describing the site as expansive and noting infrastructure gaps such as stolen or missing electrical equipment that would need to be addressed before larger public events. The commission discussed possibilities including refurbishing powwow grounds and creating a satellite cultural or programming presence at a vacant park facility near the zoo.
Members also reported progress on Dreamkeepers Park planning and fundraising. Commissioners said a request-for-proposals process is under way for a design firm and that several firms — including some from out of state — have expressed interest. The commission said design work will need to coordinate with tribal cultural staff and that fundraising will be required for items excluded from grant funding, such as interpretive signage and a monument.
The commission will continue outreach to tribal partners and potential funders; the chair reported planned presentations to area tribal leadership and to the Osage Casino Board to seek support for garden funding. Commissioners said they expect Dreamkeepers Park construction to begin only after match funding is secured and after the design and bidding phases conclude.
On programming and awards, the commission scheduled its student-recognition ceremony for April and asked members to submit nominees for the 2025 Dreamkeeper awards ahead of the selection process in September. The commission also reported a recent cross-commission education meeting with other municipal advisory bodies on collaborative opportunities in school and youth programming.
The meeting opened with roll call and a land acknowledgment; the commission voted to approve the January meeting minutes by motion, second and voice vote.
