Community Commission touts successful cultural fair; Fresh Market to open in Northbrook

The Northbrook Community Commission reported a large turnout for the village’s cultural fair and highlighted a new community partner at the event.
Philip Shapiro of the Community Commission told the Village Board the cultural fair took place at the North Suburban YMCA and featured 15 organizations, including the Thai Cultural and Fine Arts Center, the Ukrainian National Women’s League and the Glenbrook Muslim Civic Association. The Mobile Museum of Tolerance participated for the first time, providing educational exhibits focused on intolerance and antisemitism; Shapiro said the resource was particularly timely given concerns about rising antisemitism.
Shapiro said the event included performances (Kenyan drummers, Irish step dancers, a k-pop group, Bollywood performers and Ukrainian singers) and food from local vendors, and he estimated that "several hundred members of the public stopped by." He invited residents to the Community Commission’s next event, the Flamingo Friday kickoff on May 9 behind Village Hall.
Separately, President Cieslak announced a Fresh Market location is opening at 163 Skokie Boulevard with a ribbon-cutting the following morning. He described Fresh Market as offering prepared foods, produce, baked goods and other grocery services and encouraged residents to patronize the store.
These items were presented during the President’s Report/community announcements portion of the meeting and did not require board action.
