Sandpoint committee votes to recommend sustainability definition for comprehensive plan

The Sandpoint Sustainability Committee voted on Feb. 25 to recommend that the City Council insert a defined statement of “sustainability” into the city’s comprehensive plan.

Committee members moved and seconded a motion to present the proposed definition to the council; the motion was approved by voice vote. The committee chair said staff and council would receive the committee’s recommendation at an upcoming council meeting.

Why it matters: defining “sustainability” in the comprehensive plan would give the city a common reference when evaluating projects, policies and future plan amendments. Committee members noted the working definition mirrors common planning language and explicitly lists environmental, economic and social dimensions.

The adopted language discussed at the meeting phrased sustainability as meeting “the needs of the present community without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” and clarified that sustainability encompasses three dimensions: environmental, economic and social. Committee members asked staff to pass the recommendation to the mayor and the City Council when the recommendation is finalized.

The committee discussed next steps for integrating the definition into the comp plan and flagged that any follow-up implementation (for example, checklists or project review tools) would rely on additional staff time and, in some cases, budgets not yet determined.

Members said the recommended definition is intended to guide the committee’s subsequent reviews of comp-plan chapters and to provide a consistent reference for future city policy work.

The motion to recommend the definition will appear on the city council agenda at the next city council meeting for formal consideration.
