Electoral board moves two Lynchburg polling places; council to hold hearing March 11

City elections staff briefed council Feb. 25 on electoral-board action to change two polling-place locations within Lynchburg.
What changed: Dan Pence told council the electoral board voted on Feb. 6 to move Precinct 301's polling place from the public library to West Lynchburg Baptist Church, and to move Precinct 203's polling place from Jubilee Family Center to Greater Brookfield Church. Pence said both replacement locations were inspected and meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and section 24.2-3310 of the Code of Virginia was referenced for polling-place standards.
Why: Staff said Jubilee Family Center can no longer serve as a polling place by decision of that site, and Greater Brookfield Church agreed to serve. The public library location had fallen outside Ward 3 after redistricting; the electoral board recommended moving the precinct polling place back within the ward boundaries and Greater Brookfield and West Lynchburg Baptist Church were selected after site reviews.
Vote and next step: Pence said both changes were approved unanimously by the electoral board. He said council will consider the changes at a public hearing on March 11 and that staff will propose keeping the library as a backup polling site for emergency use because it is centrally located and familiar to many voters.
