County prevention coalition outlines grant strategies, requests $10,000 in local support

Representatives from Community and Family Resources updated the board on Humboldt County’s Partnership for Success (PFS) grant to prevent adult alcohol misuse and requested $10,000 in local support to help deliver prevention strategies.
Shelley Zabel, grant and contract manager, and Ramona Kick, PFS coordinator, said the county received a competitive grant routed through the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The grant totals $90,000 a year and covers staff salaries, program strategies and required travel; the presenters said the award is tight and requires per-strategy minimums.
Kick described four strategies aimed at reducing heavy and binge drinking among adults: a Wellness Institute for Senior Education (WISE) six-week course for people 55 and older, a "Think Before You Drink" media campaign, alcohol-management policies for community events, and responsible beverage server training for county restaurants and bars. She reported that the media campaign reached more than 15,000 people aged 45 and older and that two WISE programs have completed; two more are scheduled in March.
Officials said Humboldt County’s measured indicators supported the grant: county data showed higher-than-state rates on recent 30-day alcohol use and per-capita alcohol gallons. Community and Family Resources asked the board to increase its usual local contribution (historically about $7,200) to $10,000 this year to support staffing and strategy delivery.
The board asked questions about data sources and program reach. Presenters said the state Department of Health and Human Services provided the county-level statistics and described participation numbers for treatment and outreach. No formal vote on the funding request occurred at the meeting; supervisors will consider the request as part of budget planning.
