Meals on Wheels People brief Tualatin council on local services and demand for seniors

Meals on Wheels People presented an overview of its Tualatin-area services to the Tualatin City Council on Feb. 24, describing the program’s delivery model, client demographics and volunteer reliance.

Bee (pronouns she/her), grants manager for Meals on Wheels People, thanked the council for funding and summarized services: home-delivered meals, congregate dining, medically tailored meals, meals-for-kids and technology training for seniors. She said volunteers hand meals to recipients and frequently provide welfare checks and social contact.

Local program details: Bee said Meals on Wheels People serves Tri-County (Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties) and that in the Tualatin service area the organization provides congregate dining on Tuesdays and Thursdays and home-delivered meals Monday through Thursday. She said the local program serves 78 home-delivery clients and that over 31% of those clients are over age 80. The speaker described a larger organizational footprint: last year the organization served more than 1,400,000 meals to more than 11,000 individuals and the central kitchen prepares about 6,000 meals daily.

Demographics and cost: The speaker said 58% of participants earn less than $20,000 a year, a majority live alone, and that "29% are over 80." She also said "24 identify as BIPOC and then 16% are veterans." Program staff described an average cost of roughly $10.50 per meal, which includes social supports and volunteer contact.

How the city can help: Meals on Wheels staff asked the council and community to support volunteer recruitment, corporate sponsorships, donations and participation in fundraisers (such as Waterfront Blues Fest). Council members thanked the presenter and noted appreciation for technology-training and other social-support programming for older residents.
