Board honors K9 Obi after on-duty shooting; deputy and dog commended for actions that led to arrest

MADERA COUNTY, Calif. — The Madera County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 25 presented a proclamation honoring K9 Obi and deputies involved in a recent critical incident during which the K9 was shot while helping officers take a suspect into custody.
Jason Clark, representing the sheriff’s office, described the incident: deputies tracked a subject who fled, pursued him on foot, and the subject “turned around and shot Obi,” Clark said on the record. The deputies were able to take the suspect into custody, and Clark said Obi has recovered and returned to full duty.
Deputy Griever spoke briefly and thanked the community and his department for support during Obi’s recovery. The board read a proclamation recognizing Obi’s actions and presented a basket of donated items and certificates from the state legislature and a congressional recognition from the office of Rep. Adam Gray.
Board members praised deputies involved — Corporal Williams and Deputy Griever were referenced by supervisors — and thanked the Sheriff’s Foundation for assistance in Obi’s recovery. No formal vote was required for the presentation.
