Board members provided status updates on Grand Island’s trail network, reporting grooming activity, phase progress and requests to refresh the town’s trail map.
Members said the Nike Base trail system totals about 3 to 4 miles (board members cited roughly 3.5 miles for Nike Base specifically) and that combined island trails are approaching roughly 10 miles when including Scenic Woods (about 1.4 miles), Sandy Woods (about 1.6 miles) and Veterans Park (about 1.2 miles). The board said Scenic Woods (phase 3) is groomed and in unofficial public use though signage and mapping remain incomplete.
Staff reported that grooming requires substantial crew time (two full days per groom, twice weekly in heavy snow) and thanked volunteers and staff who maintained the trails during recent snowfall. Members asked that the town map be updated to include recent trail additions and to improve public information (web and social channels) so residents and visitors can find routes and rules.
The board also discussed related park items: the Nike Base pavilion materials are delivered and demolition of old buildings is underway; tennis courts were described as needing full replacement rather than patching, and the parking lot by the Volmont Diamond was identified as a longer-term funding need beyond current budgeted work.
