Operations report: second activity bus arrives, bleacher demolition set; baseball dugout awaits state approval

Thomas Barr, the district operations presenter, briefed the board at its Feb. 24 meeting on facility and transportation projects under way across Chester County schools.

Barr said the district received a second activity bus that had been on order about a year and a half and described several construction and maintenance projects in progress: a replacement HVAC unit in the Lewisville High School band room, an elementary school addition at Lewisville delayed by weather and brick delivery, and upcoming demolition work for the Great Falls High School bleacher replacement.

He told trustees the CMS (Chester Middle School) baseball dugout project cannot proceed until plans are approved by the South Carolina Department of Education Office of School Facilities (OSF), because the project requires an approved plan when student entry is involved. "We are awaiting approval from the South Carolina Department of Education Office of School Facilities to proceed with that project," Barr said.

Barr also reported modular units at Lewisville High are under construction and that McMillan Pattinson Smith Architects and Duke Energy are coordinating electrical site work. He described plans for ADA compliance projects, including added sidewalks and reconstructed ADA parking near the Lewisville High School football stadium and related work at Chester Middle School to prepare infield and bleacher pads ahead of dugout placement. Barr said donated scoreboards have arrived at the main shop and will be moved to fields this week.

Why it matters: Several projects affect safety, accessibility and event capacity and will require coordination with state offices, architects and utilities. Trustees asked clarifying questions about RFP versus contractor-responsibility for design work; Barr said contractors submit plans that OSF must approve before construction begins.

Next steps: Barr said the district will continue coordinating approvals and scheduling; the board did not take formal action on projects at the meeting.
