Finance committee backs routine operations purchases; board approves asbestos, roof and playground contracts

The Bloomfield Hills School Board on Feb. 24 approved several operations-related contracts recommended by the finance and operations committee and approved its consent agenda unanimously.

Finance and operations chair reported the committee reviewed enrollment projections, a per‑pupil funding estimate discussed in committee and multiple operations items that appeared on the board agenda that night. The committee recommended approval of an asbestos abatement RFP, vehicle purchases, a roof replacement bid and furniture purchases that had been delayed by winter weather.

At the regular meeting Jacob McDermott moved to award RFP 1052 for asbestos abatement at Conant, Eastover, Lone Pine and Ponant Way elementaries to Environmental Maintenance Engineers, Inc., for $90,000 to be paid from the bond fund. The motion passed 7–0.

The board awarded RFP 1050 for roof replacement work at Bloomfield Hills High School, Conant Elementary and Eastover Elementary to TriStar Roofing for $1,058,970, to be paid from the sinking fund. Trustee Collin moved the motion and it passed 7–0.

The board also approved a purchase of new playground equipment and additional safety surfacing for the Wing Lake Development Center from Schneider Recreation using the OMNIA cooperative in the amount of $212,790, to be paid from the center program fund. The motion passed 7–0.

Trustees discussed the sinking fund, which the finance committee reported expires at the end of 2026; the committee said it will begin diligence on whether to place a renewal on a future ballot and, if so, what levy amount to propose.

Committee members also said the district has a wage-opener bargaining item coming and will update the board periodically, mainly in closed session, as negotiations proceed.

All consent and operations motions reported in this item passed unanimously, 7–0.
