Roxxon student group urges community support for March fundraiser, eyes $100,000 goal

Mike Godfried, an adviser to the Roxxon student organization at Roxbury High School, told the Roxbury Township Board of Education that Roxxon began in 2014 and has grown into a districtwide fundraising effort that supports pediatric cancer programs.
Godfried said Roxxon has raised about $600,000 in lifetime fundraising and described an ambitious goal of $100,000 for the coming event season. "This is our twelfth year that we're doing this," Godfried said. "And for all the amazing green shirts that you guys are wearing, we appreciate that."
Student leaders described recent and upcoming fundraising efforts. Anuj Jass, Roxxon president, said the group's overnight event runs from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at Roxbury High School with an option for students to leave at 11 p.m. He said the group was on pace for about 60,000 dollars on its Salsa fundraising page and had about 350 participants at the time of the presentation. "Last year, we raised $77,000," Jass said. "Seventy percent of that went to Goryev Children's Hospital in Morristown,' and 30% to 4 Diamonds, which helps cancer research at Penn State University," he said.
Alyssa Talmadge, operations director, listed several districtwide events Roxxon ran this year: a Gold Out that raised $5,000, a districtwide PJ Day that raised another $5,000, and the first Roxxon Junior (an event for elementary and middle school students) that raised $6,500. The group also promoted a silent auction and other fundraisers and asked for community sponsorships and item donations.
Advisers and alumni emphasized leadership development as a program goal in addition to fundraising. Victoria Gonzales, an adviser and Roxbury alumna, said Roxxon focuses on involving younger students and building leadership skills so participants can sustain work beyond high school.
Board members were invited to attend the fundraiser and related events. The group encouraged community members to visit roxson.org and its Salsa fundraising page, and advisers said the silent auction runs through Saturday ahead of the event on March 7.
The presentation was given as part of the meeting's public portion following the Nixon Elementary presentation and a short student performance.
