Anderson City Council unanimously referred a petition to annex and zone 0.57 acres at 1212 Reed Road to the planning commission on their February meeting.
City Planning and Development Director Maurice McKenzie told the council the parcel is a “donut hole” — a small piece of land surrounded by city property that remained unincorporated when Concord Baptist Church acquired it about 15 years ago. The church plans to build a childhood education center on its campus; McKenzie said annexing the lot and zoning it R-20 would put permits and inspections under a single jurisdiction.
The referral means the planning commission will evaluate the annexation and zoning request at its March 4 meeting. Council discussion was limited to clarifying the exact parcel being considered; McKenzie confirmed the parcel outlined in red on the staff map is the 0.57-acre lot in question and that an adjacent property with green dots and a visible swimming pool is not part of the request.
No member of the public spoke on the item at the meeting, and the council made the referral by voice vote; the motion passed unanimously.
The planning commission’s public hearing and recommendation will be the next formal step; any final annexation and zoning action would return to the Anderson City Council after the commission’s review.
