Valley County approves two wildfire mitigation grant applications totaling $740,000

Valley County commissioners voted Feb. 24 to approve submission of two mitigation grant applications aimed at expanding wildfire resilience work in the county.
Mitigation staff requested board approval to apply for a $500,000 Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) landowner assistance grant (referred to in meeting materials as a Wildfire Resilience/Landowner Assistance grant) and for a $240,000 Western States grant targeting fuel reduction in the Tamarack area. Staff said the Western States grant requires a 10% match (approximately $24,000), and that matches are typically met with documented in-kind work by landowners or contractor time.
The mitigation director said the IDL grant is intended to fund work across multiple neighborhoods and that the county plans to concentrate the project area for the $500,000 request in the East Mountain/Cascade area. Staff noted a short timeline for the IDL application and asked for authority to finalize and sign the applications.
Commissioner discussion clarified that the grant forms included example numbers on early pages but that the full application shows the correct $500,000 request. Commissioners moved, seconded and unanimously approved both grant applications and authorized staff to sign the forms and proceed with applications.
