Boca Raton CRA delays Sanborn Square renovation, hears updates on Meisner Park and strategic planning format

BOCA RATON, Fla. — At its Feb. 24 meeting the Boca Raton Community Redevelopment Agency heard updates on downtown maintenance and capital projects and directed staff on strategic-planning timing after a multi-member discussion on downtown priorities.
Ruby Riley, downtown manager, told the board staff and city departments have determined potential camera counts and locations for the publicly owned areas of Meisner Park and are arranging fiber and power connections for the system. She said staff contracted a cleaning service to pressure-wash Downtown Boca branded umbrellas, repainted benches and trash bins black, and began resodding the park’s south end; completion of that resodding work is expected by the end of the month.
On larger capital work, Riley said the Aleta Square project site adjacent to Sanborn Square has been cleared, and staff expects a building permit and construction start soon. Because of competing high-priority park and capital projects and the downtown campus master plan implementation, staff recommended delaying a complete renovation of Sanborn Square: start design in 2027 and construction in 2028 to ensure grant funds are spent by the program deadline in 2030.
The board also discussed the city’s upcoming Trainovation strategic-planning sessions. Commissioner Wictor (who advocated for a downtown-specific strategic focus) asked whether the three-day format for the council’s strategic planning was necessary; Vice Chair Thompson and others said the meetings could be shortened and held less frequently. CRA Director Brown remarked that downtown priorities are part of the city’s overall strategic plan and recommended integrating downtown items into the citywide planning process rather than producing a fully separate downtown-only strategic plan.
Separately, the board adopted the minutes from its Feb. 10 regular meeting on a motion by Commissioner Singer, seconded by Vice Chair Thompson; the minutes were approved without recorded opposition.
Riley closed the meeting with a calendar of upcoming downtown events, including theater, music and the first City of Boca Raton Seafood Festival at the Meisner Park Amphitheatre on March 22. The meeting adjourned at 2:26 p.m.
Ending: The CRA did not take final action on the Sanborn Square change beyond a staff recommendation to delay; staff will continue project coordination and return with schedule updates as needed.
