Middletown police report: January calls, crime counts and use-of-force incidents

Chief of Police reported January 2025 activity to the Middletown Police Commission, including calls for service, crime totals, arrests and use-of-force incidents.
"For January 2025, the department handled 2,271 calls for service," the chief said. The department investigated 28 Part I crimes in January — five violent crimes and 23 property crimes; 19 of the property crimes were larceny-related. The chief said this was a "significant decrease from the previous month," and suggested cold weather may have played a role.
Part II crimes for January totaled 126. The department made 167 arrests, issued 181 traffic summonses and 456 parking tickets. The chief reported four incidents involving use of force, which he said equates to 2.4% of total arrests for the month.
The chief also told commissioners he had forwarded two press releases to the commission: one dated Jan. 14 concerning a burglary at Orange County Bank and Trust and another dated Jan. 27 about a fatal pedestrian collision on Wickham Avenue near Fairlawn. He said the burglary suspect was arraigned and held that day, but he did not have an update on the suspect's current status.
The chief said the department investigated two reported "shots fired" calls in January; both were determined to be unfounded after officer investigation, with fireworks identified as a possible cause in one report.
Commissioners asked whether they had any follow-up questions; the transcript records no requests for additional action on the monthly report.
