Board adopts health curriculum; K–8 materials to be distributed monthly, high school to receive online textbooks

The Phoenix‑Talent SD 4 school board voted to adopt a revised health‑education curriculum after questions about content, parental notification and implementation.

Staff said the K–8 program will continue with The Great Body Shop materials distributed in monthly packets in both English and Spanish; K–8 materials include family‑facing pages intended to support conversations at home. High‑school instruction will rely on a modern textbook package with online access through the district’s Clever portal; district staff said the high‑school materials can be adjusted or split into two semester courses if scheduling requires.

Board members asked about age appropriateness and notification to families. One board member said they were surprised to learn that some anatomy and development topics appear as early as fourth grade and urged clear communication with parents and caregivers. Staff responded that materials include family guides and that teachers will notify families; the district will provide copies of the student materials for parents who want to review them.

Administrators said implementation will not require major new training at K–8 because the program aligns with the district’s prior materials; high school teachers will receive additional orientation and will have online resources and teacher guides. Staff also said materials will be ordered and shipped monthly rather than in a single bulk order, allowing content updates to be incorporated over time.

Trustees approved the adoption by voice vote. The board asked staff to ensure family notification procedures are clear, to provide Spanish and English materials as promised, and to schedule any necessary teacher support ahead of classroom use.
