General Assembly adopts resolution honoring Bennington Police canine Gracie

The General Assembly adopted House Concurrent Resolution 11 on Feb. 18, 2025, a resolution in memory of Bennington Police Department canine officer Gracie. The resolution, adopted pursuant to the consent calendar, recognizes Gracie’s more than 500 deployments, the location of more than 70 persons, and the recovery of drugs and currency valued at more than $1,600,000, and it notes community outreach and school and nursing-home visits.
"Canine Gracie's many years of outstanding, dedicated service to Bennington and our surrounding region," the Member from Bennington said on the floor, "was a team like no other" alongside her handler, Officer Robert Morawski. The Member from Bennington asked the chamber to join in condolences to the Bennington Police Department and Gracie’s many admirers.
The resolution memorializes Gracie’s sudden death on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 2024, references a memorial service attended by more than 500 people, and notes plans to dedicate a new canine training yard in Gracie’s honor. The resolution directs the secretary of state to send a copy to the Bennington Police Department, Police Chief Paul J. Doucette Jr., Lieutenant Camilo A. Grande and Officer Robert Morawski.
Police Chief Paul J. Doucette Jr., Lieutenant Steve Cote of the Vermont State Police (Shaftsbury) and Michael Aldens of the Bennington Banner were present in the gallery, and the Member from Bennington asked the House to welcome them.
The resolution was read into the record and adopted pursuant to the consent calendar; the floor then recognized the guests and extended condolences.
