Monrovia council opts to preserve Anderson House in place after extended discussion; Spicer recused

The Monrovia City Council on Feb. 18 approved a preservation plan for the Anderson House and rejected relocation of the structure to Recreation Park, following an extended discussion and staff slide presentation.
City staff presented information on the building’s condition and the proposed approach to retain the house at its current location. Council members and staff said the plan would include structural work such as a new roof and installation of a foundation to replace the existing on-site dirt foundation. Council members noted that some plantings on the property predate the house and that moving the structure would risk loss of historical integrity.
Councilmember Spicer dismissed himself from participation in the agenda item because of his membership in the Historic Preservation Society. Staff and council members discussed that preserving the house on site better maintains the historic character than relocating it and also helps protect the parcel from potential redevelopment.
What happens next Staff were directed to develop a preservation scope and cost estimate; the council asked that community outreach and a project plan be prepared for a future return to the council with details and a proposed budget. The approval at the meeting moved the issue into the implementation stage, with the Community Development Department identified as the lead for follow-up work.
