Bullhead City Middle School students display impressionist and post-impressionist work during board meeting

Bullhead City Middle School students presented an art showcase to the school board during the Feb. 20 meeting, displaying pieces inspired by impressionism, post-impressionism and pointillism.
Julie Vela, principal at Bullhead City Middle School, introduced the program and said the elective art program supports both visual skills and art-history knowledge. "We are delighted and honored to present Bullhead City Middle School's art students from our art elective program," Vela said.
Jessica Malazad, the school's art teacher, described classroom activities that combined study of art movements with hands-on technique: students recreated works by Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and others, and explained materials and inspiration. Student presenters described their own processes: one student said her sunflower piece used "different shades of yellow" to convey happiness; another described a multi-day recreation of The Starry Night.
The board and superintendent praised the students' work and said the district would explore displaying pieces in district offices. The presentations were received as a community-engagement item; no board action was required.
