The New Providence School District on a recent board meeting presented a broad K–12 curriculum report that showcased classroom-level instruction, diagnostic assessment use, new electives at the high school and supervised uses of artificial intelligence in lessons.
Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Supervision Jonathan Keeney led the presentation, saying the district wanted to show “how our curriculum, our instruction, and our programming is addressing our mission statement and our portrait of a graduate.” The report included demonstrations from elementary counselors and teachers, middle- and high-school teachers, and student presenters.
Why it matters: the presentation combined classroom practice, assessment data and new course offerings that the district said are intended to support Vision 2025 strategic goals for modernized instruction, social-emotional learning and career/technical opportunities.
The report covered multiple strands of instruction. At the elementary level staff demonstrated a social-emotional lesson on names and belonging and a third-grade math routine using the I‑Ready blended-learning program. Michelle (k–6 math supervisor) explained that I‑Ready diagnostic and prerequisite reports let teachers “differentiate and do some prerequisite report before they teach that concept,” showing how teachers can group students and target instruction.
At the middle school, eighth-grade teacher Russell Anderson described a document-based-question (DBQ) writing assignment that used a teacher-customized Magic School AI writing-feedback tool. Anderson said the AI tool is “teacher controlled, it is teacher contained, and teachers can customize it to focus on exactly what it is they’re trying to target.” His students demonstrated submitting essays and receiving immediate, actionable feedback that teachers then use to plan follow-up lessons.
Students and teachers described practical guardrails and classroom procedures around AI. Third-grade students showed how they brainstorm and then use AI as a “think partner” after doing original work; the district said AI guidelines and a policy adopted over the summer were created to ensure “respectful, ethical, controlled” use.
High-school offerings highlighted new and expanded electives. Presenters described a second-year wellness physical education course focused on individualized fitness and mental-health strategies; a marketing elective that partnered with local business mentors; and advanced STEM courses including Project Lead The Way automation and robotics at the middle school and a senior biomedical engineering course at the high school. Student projects ranged from conveyor-belt prototypes to an organ-on-a-chip concept and an AI model for sign-language recognition.
Keeney emphasized continuity across grades: “By the time they get to be seniors, they really have a very, very strong foundation in those,” he said of STEM pathways. Teachers and students also described how community partnerships (business panels, grants and foundations) supported equipment and authentic feedback for student projects.
The presentation included enrollment and assessment context: district enrollment was reported as 2,270 students across Allen W. Roberts (AWR), Salt Brook, the middle school and high school, with 35 students in out‑of‑district placements (a district total of 2,305 when those placements are counted). Supervisors noted I‑Ready diagnostics are administered three times yearly and produce reports used to plan instruction at the classroom level.
Board members responded with questions and praise but no policy votes during the presentation. Administrators said the district is exploring a centralized data-management platform to bring together diagnostic and other student data next year.
The presentation concluded with directors, teachers and students thanking volunteer mentors, foundation supporters and technical staff for supporting the demonstrations and courses.
