Planning commission approves America First Field parking update, emphasizes consistent shuttle and communication

The Sandy City Planning Commission voted to accept the annual parking and access update for America First Field (9256 South State Street) and approved staff-recommended findings and conditions, the commission said Thursday.
Justin Nelson, Real Salt Lake operations, and consultants from Hales Engineering presented updated parking figures and shuttle routing for stadium events. The presenters said stadium capacity remains approximately 20,000 for soccer matches and 24,000 for concerts. They reported roughly 11,000 total stalls available around the stadium, including about 6,600 secured stalls; secured parking within a five-minute walk decreased by roughly 150 stalls while secured parking within a 15-minute walk increased by about 900 stalls compared with last year.
Hales Engineering described changes triggered by the future extension of Monroe Plaza Way, which reduced the West lot and another nearby lot, and a newly identified “flag lot” intended primarily for staff. The presentation also added South Town Mall as a supplemental parking source; presenters said the mall provides about 975 stalls and will be served by a shuttle that begins operating four hours before events from the mall (combined routes) and switches to the primary black-route shuttle starting two hours before kickoff. The shuttle will run for two hours after events.
Real Salt Lake said they moved some staff parking to South Town Mall after site lots were repurposed for Monroe Plaza Way construction and that full-time staff who park on-site number about 65 to 70 while roughly 400 part-time staff now park at South Town Mall. Justin Nelson said parking the team controls that went on sale sold out in about 15 minutes when offered online.
Commissioners asked about potential conflicts with other nearby event venues and how Real Salt Lake communicates parking alternatives to fans. Nelson said the club issues a weekly match-day advisory and updates the stadium app; the app will include live traffic and in-stadium updates. Mike Wilcox, Planning Director, said staff’s recommended conditions focus on ensuring consistent public information about shuttle routes, schedules and parking alternatives so attendees are aware of non-driving options.
No members of the public provided comment. The commission approved the update based on the two findings and two conditions outlined in the staff report; recorded yes votes included Cameron Duncan; Lenise Davenport; Dave Bromley; Jennifer George; Danny Schoenfeld; Steve Wrigley; David Hart. The motion carried.
