Parks board hears sport-court tile evaluation and staffing needs for summer programs

City parks staff and board members reported on a site visit to a modular, interlocking tile sport-court system and endorsed the product as a durable alternative to repaving asphalt. The board discussed durability, drainage and maintenance: staff said the tiles are composite plastic with drainage holes and can be removed and replaced in sections if needed; the vendor's installation includes a paved footer (asphalt or concrete) beneath the tiles to limit grass intrusion.

Board members said the product appears durable and could reduce the need for repeated asphalt repaving and that the tiles have surface textures that provide traction. Staff acknowledged maintenance tasks would still be necessary (graffiti removal, occasional tile replacement) but said pop-up replacement is feasible.

Separately, staff described a job posting and staffing plan that includes a full-time events and programs coordinator to support summer programming and seasonal positions for maintenance and program leaders. The programs coordinator would help implement community events, manage volunteers, coordinate marketing and support seasonal teams; the maintenance positions would cover mowing, trash, restroom cleaning and general park upkeep.

No formal procurement decisions were made at the board meeting; staff said they plan to continue vetting the sport-court vendor and will provide price and maintenance details in a future meeting packet. Staff encouraged board members to identify potential seasonal hires and volunteers.
