The Sign Board voted 7-0 to approve a sign variance request allowing two suspended cabinet signs at 1203 South Whitechapel Boulevard (SVE-25-0002).
Staff told the board the applicants — Lusso Labs and Minerva Labs — requested two cabinet-style hanging signs mounted beneath an archway at the building’s storefronts. Staff said the proposed signs exceed allowable sign width and that the proposed non-lit letter depth would be 1–2 inches, while the ordinance requires a minimum 2-inch depth for non-lit letters. Staff also noted the center of one proposed sign would be roughly 12 inches from the front of the door.
During deliberations several board members said the suspended signs are visually discreet and fit the building’s constrained storefront locations. One board member said the proposed signs look better than the “specimen boxes” currently present; another noted the building’s layout makes typical wall-mounted letters impractical. No member opposed the request.
A board member moved to approve SVE-25-0002 subject to the staff report dated Feb. 14, 2025; the motion carried on a 7-0 vote.
