The Sandpoint City Council voted Feb. 19 to accept a $250,000 grant from the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council to fund Phase 2 of Division Avenue corridor safety improvements focused on child pedestrian safety.
The awarded funds will be administered through LTAC and must be used to improve safety and mobility for children; staff said projects adjacent to schools generally score best for this program. Staff described Phase 2 as the segment that would extend the previous Phase 1 work (between Highway 2 and Superior) north toward Pine Street, filling gaps with new ADA-compliant ramps, a planter strip where feasible for snow storage and tree planting, and improved curb ramps.
The grant contains no local match requirement, but staff noted the project is likely to exceed the $250,000 award and that the city has budgeted for additional construction costs in the general fund. The council’s roll-call vote approved the LTAC agreement; staff said they aim to complete construction in a school break period while schools are out and asked for expedited scheduling to minimize impacts to pedestrians during construction.
