Senator Ueno asked the California State Senate on Feb. 20 to adjourn in memory of James “Robbie” Robinson, a San Francisco bartender, barber and early gay business owner who helped organize protections for patrons in the 1960s and later founded the Tavern Guild.
“Robbie was someone who was just so present in the community,” Ueno said on the Senate floor, recounting Robinson’s role creating a phone tree of bars in 1961 to warn one another when police harassment occurred, and describing his later work as a barber and business owner in the Castro.
Senators offered condolences and asked that Robinson’s name be brought forward so the Senate could memorialize him. The floor record shows the Senate approved a motion to adjourn in his memory; no additional legislative action was recorded.
Robinson, age 89, is survived by family members noted on the floor. The Senate scheduled its next floor session and then recessed for a short period after the memorial request.
