Senate designates February as Montessori Month

The California State Senate adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 17 on Feb. 20, designating February as Montessori Month.
Senator Nilo introduced SCR 17, describing the Montessori teaching method created by Dr. Maria Montessori and noting its history in California dating to demonstrations at the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. “When you enter a Montessori classroom, you'll see children working independently and in groups,” Senator Nilo said.
The resolution states that roughly 5,000 Montessori schools in the U.S. serve about 1,000,000 children, and that approximately 600 public and private Montessori schools in California serve about 40,000 students; those figures were cited from the American Montessori Society during floor remarks. Sponsors also noted workforce and credentialing challenges and encouraged collaboration with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing to develop pathways for Montessori educators.
The Senate agreed to adopt the resolution without objection; the record shows 34 ayes and 0 no votes.
The resolution is a formal recognition aimed at promoting awareness of Montessori education and does not create new licensing rules; sponsors asked the Commission on Teacher Credentialing to continue work on possible credential pathways for Montessori teachers.
