"I do not have to tell the anyone in here that volunteer firefighters are a critical part and vitally important to protect in our communities. As a matter of fact, about 80% of our state is covered by volunteer firefighters," Betsow said on the floor.
Several members spoke in support and used the debate to press for broader support measures, such as funding for equipment and steps to stabilize volunteer ranks. Members recounted recent local emergencies where volunteers provided rescue and response, including tornado and structural fire responses. Representative Jackson said volunteer firefighters rescued an 89-year-old woman after a tornado; Representative Hammitt and others described volunteer responses to fires in their districts.
