Stewart Indian School projects: $16.8M seismic rehab for old gym and lighting for quad proposed

Stacy Montooth, director of the Nevada Department of Native American Affairs, described two Capitol‑complex projects at the Stewart Indian School campus that the department says will support programming and create revenue opportunities.

C14 (Old Gym seismic rehabilitation and restoration): Public Works presented C14, a $16,800,000 project to stabilize and architecturally rehabilitate the old gym constructed in 1938 (roof previously replaced after collapse) so the building can be reused for events, programming and the campus Living Legacy initiative. Walker said prior work (CIP 17C09) had addressed the collapsed roof; C14 focuses on seismic stabilization, interior systems and architectural rehabilitation. Director Montooth said the restored gym would permit art demonstrations, speaker series and other events and could be made available to outside groups to generate revenue for the campus and department.

C21 (Quad lighting): Walker presented C21, a $428,000 project to install four 30‑foot poles with LED fixtures and underground electrical infrastructure to light the quad at Stewart to support evening public and special events.

Why it matters: The department said it currently lacks a venue on campus for gatherings larger than about 20 people and that rehabilitating the gym would both serve department programming and create an ancillary revenue stream under existing statutory authority to host outside groups.

Management and revenue: Director Montooth said the department coordinates the entire campus and would manage use of the rehabilitated gym and any revenue generated. She referenced earlier legislation that allows campus space to be offered to outside groups and said the gym restoration would expand those capabilities.

Ending: The committee heard the presentation and asked no immediate procedural questions about funding sources; Public Works included the projects in the governor’s recommended CIP package.
