Tiburon task force approves $8,000 for 2025 Jewish Festival after budget clarification

The Tiburon Town Diversity and Inclusion Task Force voted to provide $8,000 in support for a Jewish Festival planned for Sunday, Aug. 10, after members questioned whether the request would affect funding for other cultural events.
The vote came after an event organizer described last year's festival as drawing "close to a thousand people" and said the festival "brought a great sense of diversity and inclusion to the entire community." The task force chair moved approval of the funding; a second was recorded, and a roll-call vote approved the $8,000 request with seven yes votes and three members absent.
Staff told the task force the diversity task force line item for the current fiscal year is $40,000 and that, to the staff member's recollection, previous events had not been funded for more than $8,000. The organizer said the event's total budget was listed at $15,000 but that the request to the task force was $8,000.
During discussion, Council Member Fredericks said the requested amount appeared "larger than most of our events" and that they were "uncomfortable with doubling the amount," stressing a desire for equity across cultural events. Other members asked whether approving the request would preclude support for additional events later in the year; a task force member said the group had received two proposals so far and that funding four events at $8,000 each would remain within the $40,000 line-item budget.
The roll call recorded yes votes from Council Member Fredericks; Council Member Nick Farr; Council Member Ryan; Vice Mayor Wallner; Mayor and Chair Thier; At-Large Member Howie Walsh; and Vice Chair Tina (last name not specified). Absent were Karen Carrera, Ruben Kalra and Nooshin Latour. The chair declared the motion approved.
Task force members noted other recurring events the group typically supports, including Juneteenth, but no additional event proposals were presented at the meeting. The task force concluded its business and adjourned.
