Saint Croix middle school speech team honored; students perform Abbott and Costello routine

The Saint Croix School District on Feb. 19 recognized the middle school competitive speech team for a season that district staff described as “spectacular,” and two eighth-grade team leaders presented a live performance for the board.
The program, which the presenter said follows the Wisconsin Interscholastic Speech and Dramatic Arts Association, enrolled 39 students grades 6–8 this year. The team competed at three tournaments, two of which the district hosted, and received multiple top awards, district staff said.
Mandy Langan introduced the presentation and described the program’s goals: to refine communication skills, foster creativity and provide a “safe and supportive environment” for students to develop. Langan said the school’s middle-level team remains the largest in the area and continues to grow while participation elsewhere has declined.
Two eighth-graders, Lane Gillis and Henry Pomier, performed a version of Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First” to illustrate the team’s work. After the performance, board members and staff commended the students’ preparation and courage for performing before the board and community.
The board acknowledged the role of coaches and staff in hosting tournaments and supporting student development. No formal action was taken; the presentation was listed as a scheduled recognition on the meeting agenda.
Upcoming board items discussed after the presentation included scheduling and district events, but the speech-team recognition concluded the scheduled presentations segment.
