Margate commission OKs $228,681 for parking-lot repairs at Calypso Cove and Firefighters Park

The Margate City Commission on Feb. 19 approved a resolution awarding parking-lot repairs at Calypso Cove Aquatics Facility and Firefighters Park for $198,900, plus a 15% contingency for a total authorized amount of $228,680.95.
City staff said the work will be funded through a year-end budget adjustment rather than bond funds. The contract will be awarded via utilization of another municipality’s contract with Janice M. Reilly Inc., dba The Paving Lady, city staff said.
Commissioners discussed the procurement approach and the condition of the park lots. One commissioner said the parking lot at Firefighters Park had not been resurfaced since the park’s ribbon cutting in 1997 and expressed concern about long-term maintenance and striping schedules. Another commissioner urged that future similar projects be publicly bid to verify price competitiveness, while staff said the contractor being used has a track record of satisfactory work in recent city projects.
Michael Jones, director of parks and recreation, told the commission the contingency was included to cover unknown subsurface conditions that might be discovered once milling begins. Jones said staff’s intent is not to spend contingency funds unless necessary and that the work will focus on the parking and front walkway near the playground and restroom buildings.
The commission approved the resolution by roll-call vote.
