Arts Commission hears update: 12 of 26 Sunnyvale "suns" installed in city parks

City arts staff told the Sunnyvale Arts Commission that crews have installed 12 of the 26 public-art “suns” in city parks and are scheduling the remaining installations with the parks department.
Public arts manager Kristen Dance reported the installations and sites at the commission’s oral reports portion: “Last Saturday, we spent seven hours out at the parks, and we installed 12 of the 26 suns in five parks,” Dance said, listing placements she said were complete: four at Las Palmas, three at De Anza, three at Ortega, one at Panama and one at Brawley.
Dance said crews are still awaiting interpretive plaques and QR-code plaques; once delivered the plaques will be mounted at each installation. She told commissioners that while installing the pieces crews discovered some places where additional bolts or minor reinforcement will be needed to ensure long-term stability.
Staff described plans to coordinate with two-member crews from the parks department to finish the remaining installations, and said they expect to schedule the work within the next two weekends if a suitable day is available. Dance said staff believe the remaining installations can be completed quickly now that the team has refined transportation and anchoring procedures.
Commissioners and staff also discussed public reaction: Dance said passersby stopped to ask about the project during installation and that artists who participated in earlier public events were “over the moon” when they saw the finished works in the parks. Staff said a PowerPoint slideshow and some artist time-lapse videos exist from the creation process and that staff are gathering additional clips.
Dance encouraged commissioners and members of the public to visit the installed suns and noted that plaques and QR codes will be added once they arrive. She also asked commissioners to let staff know if they can assist with volunteer support for remaining installs, noting that liability and coordination with parks staff will determine volunteer roles.
