School board representative presses council to honor prior commitment for tennis/pickleball courts; manager says money reallocated to urgent street and water/se

Tim Harris, speaking on behalf of the Ishpeming School Board, urged the council to honor a prior city commitment and release funds earmarked to help renovate the high school tennis courts and expand courts for pickleball players. Harris noted strong local competition results and widespread community use of courts and pickleball, and asked the council for clarity on whether the money would be provided this year.

Interim City Manager Grant told council that the city’s prior commitment had been contingent on receipt of a grant that the city and school have applied for repeatedly and been denied for five consecutive years. Grant said the funds had been set aside as a grant match but that city staff and council must prioritize projects that deliver the broadest benefit with limited funds: this year the city faces major water and storm-sewer projects, including Third Street repairs, and Grant recommended directing the earmarked money into infrastructure that benefits more residents this budget year. He added that the city was not “closing the door” on tennis-court assistance in the future and invited further coordination between the school and city staff.

Tim Harris and other speakers emphasized the community and economic benefits of keeping courts and pickleball facilities in town; council members asked staff to continue discussions and said no final council vote had yet been taken to withdraw funding. Councilors and the manager agreed to talk further with school representatives to consider options, shared equipment or volunteer support, and to schedule the matter for a future council item when a specific proposal from the district is available.

No formal appropriation or vote to reallocate the tennis funds occurred at the meeting.
