Parks superintendent outlines new facilities, spring events and programs

Parks and Recreation Superintendent Heath delivered a short operations report at the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, announcing new facility openings and a slate of spring events and programs.
Heath said much of the first phase of the Optimum Community Center is open, including the gymnasium, multipurpose room and offices, allowing programs such as the VITA Free Tax Service and youth basketball and gymnastics to resume. “We will have a grand opening event at the March,” Heath said, and noted the Senior Enrichment Center will hold a ribbon cutting March 4, the UTV Trailhead at the Parkway of Silver Creek on March 18, and Gary Keith Park on April 11–12; more details are to follow in press releases.
Heath provided an events calendar: a multi-field adult softball tournament (AFA Bash for Bats) on Feb. 21–23 with about 70 teams expected; Bullhead City Farmers Market returns March 1; Power Play and Empire Sporting Events will bring youth baseball and softball tournaments in March with organizers expecting roughly 60 and 36 teams respectively; the Dave Kopps Tournament of Champions is scheduled for March 8 across Rotary Park, Ken Favard Park and Mohave High School. Adult basketball league play begins March 17 at Mohave High School; team registration was announced at $375 per team and $25 per player.
Heath also listed recreation programming for children and older adults, including “Fun Fridays” activities at community centers and Golden Games training sessions; he encouraged residents to register at bullheadcity.com/recdesk or call (928) 763-0158 for more information and to volunteer.
Commissioners who spoke praised recent Golden Games events and thanked staff for outreach and programming. No formal action was taken on the report; it was entered for the commission's information.
