The council said it would amend procedural limits to allow the committee to include the three candidates. Councilmember Eric Edgerton moved to appoint the three candidates; the motion was seconded and carried on a voice vote with no recorded opposition.
Adam Smith, who said he has worked in recreation management and nonprofit youth bicycle programs in Colorado and California and returned to the area two years ago, told the council he wanted to "give back to the community through my experience and passion for recreation." Melissa Drennan described herself as a 22-year Woodfin resident who voted for the town's 2016 bond initiatives and said she wanted to help deliver those projects to completion. Katie Cox cited work with the Woodfin Community Garden steering committee and experience with food-resiliency groups as her primary background for serving on the committee.
Council discussion noted there is no existing ordinance limiting the advisory body's size and that the council can expand membership at its discretion. Supporters said the three finalists offered different skills the town can use as it rebuilds parks and greenways in the wake of Tropical Storm Helene.
The council's action will allow staff to complete final onboarding and scheduling for the new members.
