Harrisburg sets 2025 dates for Hotspot Saturdays cleanup; volunteers credited with 50 tons removed

Harrisburg's public works committee voted to place a resolution on the legislative agenda to reestablish Hotspot Saturdays, a volunteer-driven community cleanup initiative. Councilman Rodriguez said the program will hold six events in 2025 and that volunteers and partners have removed roughly 50 tons of trash across past seasons.
"In the past three years, this initiative has really just took on a life as its own," Councilman Rudy Rodriguez told the committee. He said Keep Dauphin County Beautiful recognized the volunteer group and recommended an award from Keep PA Beautiful after volunteers removed approximately 50 tons of waste during the program's efforts.
Councilman Rodriguez announced the 2025 schedule and neighborhoods for the six Hotspot Saturdays events: April 19 (Ethel Alley), May 10 (Midtown), June 14 (Uptown), July 26 (North Harrisburg), Aug. 23 (Allison Hill) and Sept. 13 (South Side). He said events typically run 10 a.m. to noon and that volunteers should sign up by emailing rrodriguez@harrisburgpa.gov or calling the clerk's office for a waiver.
Committee members and staff also noted partnering organizations, including local sponsors and the city's communications office, and said the program saves disposal costs via waivers and other support.
Councilman Rodriguez moved the committee resolution to the legislative session agenda for a formal vote; no legislative action was taken at the work session.
