Vicki Kaufman, a volunteer with the San Diego Botanic Garden who described herself as a retired family counselor and former caregiver, told the Encinitas Senior Citizen Commission on Feb. 18 that she will present a class for caregivers about how dementia affects the five senses.
Kaufman said the Botanic Garden accepted her proposal and that the class is scheduled for Saturday, March 29 from 10 a.m. to noon. She said the session is aimed at caregivers and that informational flyers were included in the meeting packet.
Kaufman cited regional and national figures during her remarks, saying the Alzheimer’s Association notes roughly 70,000 people in San Diego and Imperial counties currently live with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. She also referenced nationwide estimates for dementia prevalence among older adults and described the program as part of outreach to families and caregivers who might bring loved ones to the garden.
Kaufman said the class content draws on her professional experience designing caregiver programs and will focus on practical caregiving topics tied to sensory changes in dementia. She asked commissioners to help spread the word; the presenter included contact information on the flyer and said additional details are available from the Botanic Garden’s education department.
